The documentary I’ve been quiet about for years

A documentary series I helped with, Dark Night of Our Souls, is available to watch from start to finish.

This one took years to make. Literally years. Film projects stretch time like taffy, so I’m a little fired up that it’s real and you can see it.

What it’s about

The film digs into stress, consciousness and post-traumatic growth. That last one is the part I can’t shut up about.

Post-traumatic growth is the idea that some people come through the worst chapters of their lives with a changed sense of themselves, their relationships or what matters to them. That doesn’t make the experience good, and it doesn’t mean anyone owes the world a story of growth after trauma.

Worth saying plainly: not everyone grows, and this research is messier than anything I can measure with a lactate meter. But the question of how people change after hardship is worth taking seriously.

If you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you know stress is my whole deal. Eustress, distress, hormesis, the dose that builds you versus the dose that buries you. I’ve spent my career studying how the body responds to a stressor and adapts.

This documentary takes a related question and points it at the parts of us that never show up on a lab test. Consciousness. Meaning. The dark night itself, and what waits on the far side of it.

It’s heavier than my usual carbZ-and-cold-plunge fare. I think you’ll be glad you sat with it.

Huge thanks to my friend Jade and everyone else who poured themselves into this. Films like this don’t happen without a small crew willing to sit in the hard stuff for a very long time.

Questions after you watch? I’d love to hear what lands for you.
